BREEDING HISTORY & DESCRIPTION
UC-Central White is a Hard-White Spring common wheat variety developed by the University of California wheat breeding program and tested in Regional Yield trials as line UC1932. It is derived from the cross Blanca Grande 515/4/Summit/3/Hahn/*2Turaco.
YIELD
UC-Central White is a semidwarf variety 14 cm taller and two days later heading than Patwin-515HP. UC-Central White grain yield is significantly higher (11% across locations) than Patwin-515HP and its grains are 31% heavier and with better test weight. UC-Central White yields are slightly higher but not significant than those of Blanca Grande 515, Central Red and Summit 515. It also performed significantly better than other HWS varieties in the intermountain region. UC-Central White showed stable yields in trials with reduced water and N applications.
Dark blue indicates high stability and dark brown low stability |
QUALITY
UC-Central White showed outstanding bread making quality in evaluations performed by the quality Laboratory at the California Wheat Commission from six locations in 2022. Its breadmaking quality was even better than Patwin-515HP which is already included in the CWC list of recommended varieties based on quality. UC-Central White showed a stronger gluten reflected in both mixograph and farinograph tests and significantly higher loaf volume. UC-Central White has the optimum high molecular weight glutenins (Glu-A1= 1, Glu-B1= 17+18 Glu-D1 = 5+10).
AREA OF ADAPTATION AND PRIMARY USE
UC-Central White is very well suited for the Sacramento, San Joaquin and Imperial Valleys where it shows high yield potential under irrigation. It performed very well also in the intermountain region. Its primary use is for bread production.
PEST & DISEASE RESISTANCE
UC-Central White is resistant to all current races of stripe rust present in California and carries the rust resistance gene Yr15. It also shows good tolerance for BYDV and shows higher resistance to septoria tritici blotch than Blanca Grande-515.
