Lima - UC Luna

DEVELOPMENT

UC Luna was increased as a single plant selection from the single cross of 'Kjngston x Mezcla', two commercial lima bean varieties.  In the F2 and F3 generations, single plants were selected for white seed coat, white cotyledon, determinate bush types, and maturity.

UC Luna is a bush baby lima; it has a determinate growth habit and matures in 110 days.  UC Luna has a small, flat, white seed coat.

ADAPTATION

UC Luna is well adapted to the climatic and soil variability of several baby lima growing areas.  It has been tested and performed well in the Chico/Butte County area of the northern Sacramento Valley, Yolo County area (Davis), the northern San Joaquin Valley counties of San Joaquin and Stanislaus, and Fresno County in the southern San Joaquin.

PEST AND DISEASE RESISTANCE

UC Luna is susceptible to prevalent races of root-knot nematode but has moderate resistance to Lygus insect sting damage. Yield response to Lygus pressure is very good.

SEED CLASSES AND PRODUCTION

Seed classes are Breeder, Foundation, Registered, and Certified.  Foundation seed will be maintained and distributed by the UCD Foundation Seed Program.
