DEVELOPMENT

Dylan was developed by the US Department of Agriculture, Grain Legume Genetics and Physiology Research Unit at Pullman, Washington in cooperation with the College of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Center of Washington State University.

BREEDING HISTORY & DESCRIPTION

Dylan originated as an F8 selection from the cross ‘Blanco Lechoso’/‘Dwelley’ made in 1994. Dylan is a large seeded kabuli type chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) with good resistance to ascochyta blight (caused by Ascochyta rabiei). It has a fern leaf structure that differs from the unifoliolate leaf structure typical of Sanford, Dwelley and Sierra. Plants are branched at the base and have an indeterminate flowering habit. Pods are rhomboid-ellipsoid and have glandular trichomes, which give them a pubescent appearance. Pods have one and occasionally two seeds which are light-cream colored.

PEST & DISEASE RESISTANCE

Dylan has good resistance to Ascochyta blight (caused by Ascochyta rabiei), a disease that has caused serious damage to chickpea crops in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

YIELD DATA

Dylan has out yielded Dwelly and Sierra in yield trials.

SEED CLASSES AND PRODUCTION

The Washington State Crop Improvement Association will maintain breeder seed of Dylan.
