Field view of UC-Alameda

BREEDING HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

UC-Alameda is an F6 derived selection from the cross Butta 12//Msel/BCD-TTA-J and it was mainly selected for its outstanding malting quality (it carries the good quality allele on chromosome 5H from “Harrington”, which improves α-amylase, β-glucan and FAN values). UC-Alameda also has outstanding grain yield (one of the top entries in the Preliminaries), good resistance/tolerance to diseases and good agronomic type. UC-Alameda is tolerant to the complex BYDV–CYDV, Stripe Rust and Powdery Mildew, all three diseases commonly present in the Central Valley. It was evaluated during 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 for grain yield in Preliminary trials, and for malting quality at the USDA-ARS laboratory, Madison, WI. UC-Alameda was entered in Regional Trials in 2019 as UC 1911, data can be seen at the UC Davis small grains site: http://smallgrains.ucanr.edu/Annual_Variety_Results/

YIELD AND MALTING QUALITY

Butta 12 produces a grain yield similar to UC Tahoe and Full Pint.  UC Tahoe and Butta 12 are similar for malting quality.  Butta 12 malt is capable of producing a wide array of flavors.  For distillers, Butta 12 has an advantage over many cultivars in that it is low in glycosidic nitrile.

DESCRIPTION

  • Growth habit: Spring
  • Spike type: Two-rowed
  • Awn type: Smooth
  • Rachilla hair: Short
  • Aleurone color: White

AGRONOMIC STRENGTHS

  • Outstanding grain yield
  • Big, plump grains
  • Good tolerance to BYDV - CYDV
  • Resistant to Stripe Rust and Powdery Mildew
  • Excellent Malting quality
