Barley - UC 937

DEVELOPMENT

UC 937 was developed by Dr. Robert Matchett and segregating material was received from Dr. Matchett in 1987. Subsequent generations were handled in a pedigree selection program. A final head row was selected by Lynn Gallagher in 1992, bulked, and designated UCD 92-10,615 for preliminary yield trials.

BREEDING HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION

UC 937 was selected from the hybrid Smal/Sunbar 401/3/Gus/Kombyne/Smal. Smal has the parentage Steptoe/2*Diamant/3/Minn Dwarf 64,98-8/Briggs/4/Asse.

UC 937 is mid-to-late season maturing, short statured, six-rowed with semi-smooth awns.

ADAPTATION

UC 937 is intended for all areas in California where spring barley is sown in the late fall to early winter (November-January) for use as animal feed.

PEST AND DISEASE RESISTANCE

UC 937 is moderately resistant to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV), stripe rust (P.striiformis f. sp. Hordei), leaf rust (caused by P. hordei), scald (rhynchosporium secalis), and net blotch (caused by Helminthosporium teres).

FORAGE YIELD DATA

In tests where stripe rust was at epidemic levels, UC 937 yielded 8,000 lbs/acre.

SEED CLASSES AND PRODUCTION

Seed classes are breeder, foundation, and certified. Breeder and foundation seed will be maintained by the Foundation Seed Program, University of California, Davis. Breeder seed will be generated periodically from bulked head-row purification plantings as needed.
