PEST & DISEASE RESISTANCE
Cal Red oat is very susceptible to Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, the causal agent of Red Leaf disease. In addition Cal Red is susceptible to stem rust, moderately susceptible to crown rust, and moderately resistant to powdery mildew. Diseased leaves are of unknown nutritional quality.
The thin stems of Cal Red appeal to consumers because of their superior palatability, but they also contribute to the fact that Cal Red lodges badly, though less so than the variety ‘Montezuma.’ In the absence of disease Cal Red makes excellent hay. Grain yields are low.
